A hardened swedish detective working in Britain struggles to deal with having witnessed the murder of a fellow detective. He struggles to come to terms with her loss whilst investigating her murder, helped (and sometimes hindered) by what he calls manifests - the ghosts of victims and long-passed criminals, including the shade of his recently deceased detective partner.
